TV - Stranger Things Casting

Just when you thought Stranger Things couldn't get any more like The Goonies...

Sean Astin is reported to be joining the cast for Stranger Things season 2. Yes, Mikey, leader of The Goonies (aka Samwise from Lord of the Rings) will play Bob Newby, "a kind-hearted former nerd who went to high school with Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) and Sheriff Hopper (David Harbour). Bob is now the manager of the Hawkins RadioShack." Well, he's going to need something to do now the political campaigning is over for another 4 years.

Also joining the cast of the Netflix Original series is Paul Reiser (of Aliens and My Two Dads fame) who is Dr. Owens, a Department of Energy "man in a suit" whose job it is to “contain” the events of the previous year. The Aliens film link is, apparently, important as Season 2 of Stranger Things is meant to feel like a film sequel, being set a year ahead of the original series and James Cameron's work on sequels inspired creator Matt Duffer, who said “There’s Temple of Doom, Aliens, Terminator 2. I guess a lot of this is James Cameron. But he’s brilliant. And I think one of the reasons his sequels are as successful as they are is he makes them feel very different without losing what we loved about the original. So I think we kinda looked to him and what he does and tried to capture a little bit of the magic of his work”. ”

A third new character joining the cast will be Danish actress Linnea Berthelsen, who has been cast as Roman. According to Netflix, she’s “an emotionally damaged, magnetic young woman who suffered a great loss as a child. Although she does not live in Hawkins, she is mysteriously connected to the supernatural events at the lab…”

Adding to the casting of Sadie Sink, who has starred in another Netflix show, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, playing another new character, Max alongside “very muscular and hyper-confident” brother Billy, who will be played by Australian born Dacre Montgomery, The Red Ranger in the upcoming Power Rangers movie, and the news that all the kids from the first season will be making a return, it looks like Stranger Things will just be getting....erm....stranger, very soon.
