Film - 89th Academy Award Winners

The winners of the 89th Academy Awards were announced overnight. See the full list (and hopefully we get them right first time)...

So, nobody is going to be talking about anything other than "that mistake" are they? La La Land DID win six of the awards it was up for, including Best Actress for Emma Stone but kudos needs to go to Moonlight for picking up three including Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali beating shoe-in Dev Patel) as well as Best Picture. For us, it was great to see Casey Affleck getting Best Actor in such esteemed company and Viola Davis' award was also much deserved. And, although Mel Gibson missed out on the Best Director award, Hacksaw Ridge did end up picking up two - for sound design and editing. Other technical awards include Suicide Squad getting recognised for hair and makeup and Arrival got the award for sound editing but that was all it picked up surprisingly. We're also really pleased to see that the short film Sing won the best short film - see our review of it here.

There were great performances from Justin Timberlake and Auli'i Cravalho, stirring speeches, laughter (intentional and otherwise) and, with 2016 being "that kind of year" the in memoriam segment ensured that there wasn't a dry eye in the house, including a tribute to the late Bill Paxton whose death was announced yesterday, so it was truly a night to remember, although one that some may want to forget...

Talking of which, what of the STBPredicts Scorecard - how did he do?
