Today at the Proms - Prom 8

Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2018, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 8: Youthful Beginnings ...

Now this looks like a good mix of the known and the more unusual. Two composers I don't know here with Lili Boulanger and Morfydd Llwyn Owen alongside two of the greats of the first half of the 19th century.



Doing a little bit of research on your behalf (you lucky people), here's what I found out.



Lili Boulanger was the first female winner of the Prix de Rome at 19, having been "discovered" by Gabriel Faure at the age of just 2. This year marks the centenary of her death, aged just 24, and her work is still celebrated, being described as "Wagner with a touch of Debussy" apparently.



Another death centenary is marked for Morfydd Llwyn Owen, who was a prolific composer in the early part of the 20th century, as well as being an accomplished pianist and mezzo-soprano, leaving a legacy of over 250 scores at her death in 1918, aged just 27.  Her compositions range from orchestral tone poems and chamber ensemble works to choral and piano pieces.



So now we all know. Here's a little taster of Lili Boulanger's work with the Seattle Symphony orchestra performing D’un matin de printemps which you will hear tonight.
