Today at the Proms - Prom 43

Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2018, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 43: Daniel Barenboim & West–Eastern Divan Orchestra ...



We start with Tchaikovsky's very famous Violin Concerto, always a safe bet for a concert opener with it's highly recognisable finale and it will be a joy to listen to Lisa Batiashvili's solo.



After the interval, the London premiere of David Robert Coleman's work should be interesting. It is a piece of music that was commissioned by Daniel Barenboim himself for a text from Najla Said's book of the same name. Coleman himself describes the context of the text thus "In the piece she returns to Lebanon in 2006 and gets caught up in the Lebanon war which brings her issues of identity to a crisis point." It will be interesting to see how the text has been interpreted.



Finally we have a new composer to me with Alexander Scriabin but my investigations on his work prove promising. Described as influential to the work of Stravinsky and Prokofiev, his work used his gift of synaesthesia (a confusion of senses - e.g. hearing colours) and his work on atonalism was ahead of its time. According to his biographer, Faubian Bowers, "No one was more famous during their lifetime, and few were more quickly ignored after death" so here's a taster of tonight's work, this from the Proms of 2010, to see how true that should remain.
