Today at the Proms - Prom 55

Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2018, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 55: Iván Fischer & Budapest Festival Orchestra ...

It looks like we're getting Brahms & Liszt this evening. Nothing to do with rhyming slang this time though. Instead we get the full Symphony No 1 from Brahms after the interval.

And it's all gone quite Hungarian before the interval which is appropriate for the Budapest Festival Orchestra. We have two Hungarian Rhapsodies from Liszt, from his set of 19 piano pieces all based on the folk music of the country. Interspersed with these we have two Hungarian Dances from Brahms, one based on folk music and the other his own composition. Depending on how "up" you are on your Magyar traditions you will be able to tell which is which.

Sandwiched in between all of those is a little Zigga Zigga from Sarasate... ok it's properly his wonderfully passionate Zigeunerweisen or Gypsy Airs. Here's a taster...
