Film - BAFTA Film Awards

The winners of the 2022 EE British Academy Film Awards were announced last night. Susan Omand took a look at who won what...

After going virtual for the last two years, nominees and guests attended an in-person ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall last night, hosted by Rebel Wilson and televised on the BBC. We were treated to a couple of hours of inspiring speeches, superb frocks and wonderful musical interludes at the ceremony, not least Dame Shirley Bassey giving it laldy with Diamonds are Forever to celebrate 60 years of Bond, while Emilia Jones performed the beautiful Joni Mitchell’s ‘Both Sides Now’ from the film CODA.

Awards-wise, Dune was the big winner, scooping five masks, but these were all in the more "technical" categories (Original Score, Cinematography, Production Design, Sound and Special Visual Effect), naturally, because it is a sci fi movie and they never win the headline awards [now, now - Ed]. Instead Best Film went to The Power of the Dog which also saw the Director award being given to Jane Campion, only the third woman to win the category. Other double award winners included CODA which picked up Best Adapted Screenplay for Siân Heder and Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur, and I guess you could say that the Bond film, No Time to Die, also got two, even though one of those was the public vote for Lashana Lynch in the EE Rising Star category, rather than the Academy voting specifically for her performance in the film. It was also good to see the West Side Story adaptation getting a Supporting Actress award for Ariana DeBose and also picking up best Casting. However, I do feel that Mike Faist should have got the nod for his supporting actor nomination [but it's also brilliant that Troy Kotsur did get it. Why can't more have more than one winner of these things?! - Ed.]

Other than that, the winners were all one offs but there were still some very big names who got those awards with Kenneth Branagh's Belfast getting Outstanding British Film, Will Smith taking the Leading Actor award for King Richard and Paul Thomas Anderson getting the nod for Original Screenplay for his Licorice Pizza [what do you mean it wasn't Aaron Sorkin?! - Ed.]

It was very disappointing though that Boiling Point and Don't Look Up both missed out on any of the four nominations they were both up for but I'll leave you with, for me, the highlight of the evening.
