Film - BAFTAS

As expected, All Quiet on the Western Front created a lot of noise as the winners of the 2023 EE BAFTA Film Awards have been announced. Here's the full list...

All Quiet on the Western Front won seven of the fourteen BAFTAs it was nominated for: Best Film; Director for Edward Berger on his BAFTA debut; Film Not in the English Language; Adapted Screenplay; Cinematography; Original Score and Sound.

The Banshees of Inisherin won four out of its 10 BAFTA nominations: Outstanding British Film; Original Screenplay; Supporting Actor for first time nominee Barry Keoghan and Supporting Actress for Kerry Condon. Meanwhile Elvis, nominated for 9 awards, won four BAFTAs: including Leading Actor for another first-time nominee Austin Butler; Casting; Costume Design and Make Up & Hair. Very surprisingly, though, Everything, Everywhere, All At Once only won the award for Editing, having been nominated for ten different categories.

Other single awards included Cate Blanchett who picked up her fourth BAFTA with the Leading Actress award for Tár, a film which had been nominated for five awards. It was, however, good to see that Charlotte Wells won Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for the indie film Aftersun. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio won Animated Film while the British Short Animation award went to The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse, which was such a hit on TV over the Festive season. Navalny won the Documentary category, while the BAFTA for British Short Film was won by An Irish Goodbye. Avatar: The Way of Water, unsurprisingly won Special Visual Effects; and Babylon won Production Design. The EE Rising Star Award, the only award voted for by the public, went to Emma Mackey, who is probably best known just now for her TV role in Sex Education but is definitely one to watch on the film front too.

The BAFTA Fellowship was presented to renowned British costume designer Sandy Powell. The Fellowship is the highest accolade bestowed by BAFTA in recognition of an individual’s outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, television or games across their career.

The awards were presented in a ceremony hosted by Richard E. Grant and Alison Hammond at The Royal Festival Hall and broadcast on BBC One and iPlayer. The EE BAFTAs celebrate the very best in film of the past year.
