SotD - Saturday Throwback: Jimmy Olsen's Blues

Song of the Day Saturday Throwback is some music from back in the day to kick off your weekend in style. This week Steve Taylor-Bryant gets the Jimmy Olsen Blues...

"Well, I don't think I can handle this
A cloudy day in Metropolis
I think I'll talk to my analyst
I got it so bad for this little journalist"

The Spin Doctors pretty much owned one of my summers back in 1991ish. I was a 15/16 year old, just out of school with unremarkable exam results and an apprenticeship building rally cars (read - making tea and getting my testicles covered in gearbox oil by the nasty big men) but I had a band. We were okay, playing covers in a pub on a Friday night, convincing the barmaid we were all old enough for half a cider and black, a few months later I'd join a more serious project and spend 15 odd years writing and playing original material, but for that period of time I was a fresh faced dreamer with little or no ego. I didn't notice the girls who liked the drummer I was, naivety is a bitch, I thought everyone wanted the string twiddler or the shouty microphone face. In my own head I was the Jimmy Olsen that The Spin Doctors write of. I wanted my Lois Lane but I was thwarted by the Supermen at the front of the stage (even the keyboard player got more action than me! I mean, THE KEYBOARD PLAYER! What the actual fu...) and there I was at the back doing the important stuff, almost invisible. My only fun at these gigs was when we covered The Spin Doctors. We did Two Princes to end the first set, Little Miss Can't Be Wrong in the second, and Jimmy Olsen's Blues as an encore (along with Ugly Kid Joe). Great and funky bass, random unrequited superhero love lyrics, but so much awesomeness to sit and bash out.

"Lois Lane please put me in your plan
Yeah, Lois Lane you don't need no Superman
Come on downtown and stay with me tonight
I got a pocket full of kryptonite"
