SoTD Special - Eleanor Rigby

The Beatles Eleanor Rigby

In which SoTD takes a bit of a mental health detour with Reece Morris-Jones...

Monday was World Mental Health Day, which aims to educate people on Mental Health issues and dispel some of the surrounding stigmas by getting people talking about the topic. This week, SoTD will be all about songs on that theme, that hopefully illustrate how music can be both affected by, and effect illnesses of the mind.

Loneliness kills. As much as modern society teaches us to be independent and self-sufficient, nothing truly beats spending time with people you adore. Yet what if you had none of that? No loving family or friends?

Yet society expected you to put on a happy, smiling face anyway? Low moods, depression and any other sort of associated mental illnesses can result. Yet you have no-one to turn to for help or understanding.

Somehow The Beatles managed to create a song that not only explores the effects loneliness has on someone, but it also puts you in the shoes of Eleanor, so you too can empathise with her. What results is an all time great song.

And hopefully, some understanding for those that have never known what it's like.

If you want to learn more about mental health issues, or feel that you may be suffering from them or related illnesses, the Mind website is a great place to start. http://www.mind.org.uk/
