Today at the Proms - Prom 36

Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2018, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 36: Mahler, Wagner and Webern ...

A very interesting mix in tonight's Prom with the atonal abstract tone painting of Webern's Five Pieces that shocks as much as it intrigues the ear with dissonance and disconnect. Next we have a stunning Adagio from Mahler's 10th Symphony, left incomplete by the composer and achingly dark, which is surprising since it is not in a minor key.

After the interval we get the first Act of Die Walküre, the second of the four operas in Wagner's infamous Ring cycle. The full cycle lasts over 15 hours but, luckily we found a video that condenses the whole lot into just 7 minutes.

Just be vewwy vewwy quiet....
