Today at the Proms - Proms 45 & 46

Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2018, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 45: Orchestre de la Suisse Romande & Jonathan Nott and Prom 46: Benjamin Grosvenor & National Youth Jazz Orchestra ...

Another double Prom day with the early evening slot being filled by an orchestra celebrating its centenary with a Proms debut and a delightful selection. We carry on from yesterday with more Debussy and Ravel and it will be interesting to hear how the new orchestration of the Ravel differs from the traditional interpretation. They follow that with the wonderful Stravinsky and his music for the ballet Petrushka.

However, for once, for me, Stravinsky isn't the highlight of the evening as the late night Prom is where it's at with some classical jazz (nice!) with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.  There's a world premiere, a new arrangement of an old favourite and quite simply THE BEST glissando slide in music at the start of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue is thanks, not to Gershwin, but to Grofé's orchestral arrangement. Here's a snippet of how the Royal Phil made it sound in the 2015 Proms
