Today at the Proms - Prom 71

Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2019, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 71: Bach Night ...

Now this is an interesting idea. Tonight, as well as four wonderful orchestral suites from the oeuvre of Bach [so his Bach-catalogue then? - Ed] we will get four completely new world premieres. What's interesting about that you might think, don't we get world premieres quite regularly through the proms season?

Well, yes. BUT. Each of these four new pieces of work is related in some way to one of the Bach pieces being played tonight, taking inspiration from the dance movements of the suites and either responding, contrasting or complementing the work. See? Told you it was interesting.

Back to the Bach though and here's the Bourrée (a running, skipping style of dance, often wearing clogs to emphasise the steps [oh, that wouldn't get annoying at all would it - Ed]) from Suite no 1, played here by the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. Keep your eye on the extra-enthusiastic conducting oboe player on the left.

Here's the full programme for this evening's Prom which you can listen to live from 19:30 on Radio 3 or on the iPlayer
