Film - EE BAFTA Nominations 2020

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the nominations for the EE British Academy Film Awards in 2020. Susan Omand picks her winners...

So, out of the 39 feature films getting a mention, it looks like Joker leads the pack in the BAFTA nominations this year with 11, followed closely by The Irishman and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, both with 10 with the Golden Globe winning 1917 getting 9 nods.

Looking at the lists, it's good to see films not in the English language making it into several of the mainstream categories again this year after Roma broke the mould last year. It's also good to see a documentary, For Sama, making it into the Outstanding British film category. Avoiding the comment that everyone else is making about the lack of diversity in the acting categories, I do think that they will be hard-fought and it will be interesting to see which of Margot Robbie's roles does better as she goes up against herself in the Supporting Actress category. Unsurprisingly, though, none of the big superhero blockbusters or sci-fi epics made it any further than the technical categories... unless you count Shaun the Sheep that is.

However, the films that are nominated are all good ones, if not unexpected, and I don't think there's any that really don't deserve to be there for one reason or another.

The nominations were announced by Ella Balinska and Asa Butterfield at BAFTA Piccadilly in London. and you can watch the announcement below:
