Opinion - The BRIT Awards 2020

The winners of this year's BRIT Awards were announced last night. Here's how Susan Omand's predictions got on...

Well, Lewis Capaldi didn't quite sweep the boards at last night's BRIT awards, only getting two of the awards out of his four nominations, but he did take a bottle of Buckfast on stage and thanked his late Grandmother for one speech and downed a bottle of beer onstage and got his other speech totally muted because of swearing... oh, come on, it's Lewis f***ing Capaldi. If you follow him on social media (which I highly recommend) you'd be f***ing surprised if he DIDN'T f***ing swear! F***.

However, his two awards really were very much deserved (yes, I know, I've been championing the Scottish Beyonce since before he didn't get the Rising Star award at last year's Brits) getting Best New Artist and Best Song for Someone You Loved.

Best Male Solo Artist (a category that is going to disappear next year when it is merged with the Best Female Solo Artist to just be Best Solo Artist [I see what they did there - Ed]) went to Stormzy who did indeed have a storming year, with Best Female Solo Artist going to Mabel, who picked up her award THIRTY YEARS TO THE DAY after her mother picked up her own BRIT awards on the same stage... what do you mean "Who's her mother?" For goodness sake! Well, if you don't know, I'm not going to tell you. [No, but I am. It's Neneh Cherry - Ed].

On the International front, Billie Eilish won Best Female Solo Artist - as a disclaimer I'm pretty sure she hadn't been announced as the voice of the latest Bond theme when I made my predictions so I didn't know who she was really. Also I had been kind of thrown by no Bjork nomination in this category this year. Eilish also performed said Bond theme on the show, backed by a 200 piece live orchestra with added Zimmer. That's conductor/composer Hans Zimmer, not the walking aid btw. Best Male Solo Artist went to Tyler the Creator (and I'm still none the wiser about who he is but good on him.)

Foals won the Best Group award, after being nominated twice before, and I was quite surprised, on doing some investigation, that the band have been around since 2005 with 6 studio albums to their name. I guess I need to do some more investigation into what they actually sound like then. See not knowing so many of these winners? God, I felt old.

That feeling was exacerbated for a totally different reason by watching Rod the Mod Stewart backed by fellow Faces alumni Ronnie Wood and Kenney Jones belting his way through Stay With Me from 1971 to close the show. That song was a hit nearly 50 years ago... and I knew all the words!!

Aaaanyway...

The best performance of the night for me, along with the award for Best album, went to the rapper Dave and he may have caused a little bit of a drama himself with this stunning song on the night. Watch and listen (very carefully) to the full performance of Black (hopefully, unless YouTube have pulled it).

Here's how my predictions did btw - the answer is "average".
