SoTD Special - Shine on You Crazy Diamond

Pink Floyd Shine on You Crazy Diamond

In which SoTD takes a bit of a mental health detour with Reece Morris-Jones...

Today is World Mental Health Day, which aims to educate people on Mental Health and dispel some of its stigmas by getting people talking about the topic. This week, SoTD will be all about songs on that theme, that hopefully illustrate how music can be both affected by, and affect, illnesses of the mind.

Today's song is a tragic story and is inspired by Pink Floyd witnessing the return of Syd Barret, seven years after he suffered a breakdown from drug abuse. According to accounts by the band, Barret had shaved all of the hair from his body, eyebrows included. Even trying to complete normal tasks was impossible, with him trying to brush his teeth by placing the toothbrush against his teeth and jumping up and down.

From this, came the bands inspiration (and perhaps tribute), to the friend they had once known and who he was now.

If you want to learn more about mental health issues, or feel that you may be suffering from them or a related illnesses, the Mind website is a great place to start. http://www.mind.org.uk/
