Film - 89th Academy Award Nominations

The Oscar Nominations were announced yesterday...

As everyone expected, La La Land led the way as the Oscar nominations were announced yesterday picking up 14 mentions, which ties the film for the record of most nominations in one year, alongside Titanic in 1997 and the classic All About Eve in 1950. Arrival and Moonlight picked up 8 nominations each with Lion, Manchester By Sea and Hacksaw Ridge picking up 6 apiece.

It was good to see that Hollywood has finally forgiven Mel Gibson by giving him a nod in the Best Director category and also gratifying that "over-rated actress" Meryl Streep got her 20th Oscar nomination this year.  Nice too, to see Arrival getting more recognition in the acting awards than is usually the case for science fiction films, with other big sci-fi/superhero blockbusters like Rogue One, Suicide Squad, Doctor Strange and Star Trek Beyond getting the expected mentions in the technical categories. And no mention for Deadpool at all (how dare they!). Just be thankful though that you don't have to sit through all the films like the voters do - the documentary OJ: Made in America clocks in at 7 hours 47 minutes ON ITS OWN, making it the longest film ever to be nominated.

We let Steve Taylor-Bryant pretend to be Paul the Octopus and he's given us "the big six" predictions for the main acting categories which we've included in the full list below (#STBPredicts).
