Comics - Hollow Monsters

The Kickstarter campaign for Monty Nero’s unique new comic-book Hollow Monsters is now live...

Hollow Monsters connects real and imagined horrors for a gang of kids on a suburban housing estate in the 1980’s. Is there something lurking in a forest near their homes? As the decades progress and the kids grow up the nightmare stays with them, echoing through their lives with disturbing effect.

Monty Nero is a member of Inkpot Studios in the Dundee Comics Space, and an award winning Duncan of Jordanstone Masters graduate at Dundee University. He co-created the hit series Death Sentence with artist Mike Dowling and its sequel, Death Sentence: London, had Martin Simmonds as an artist. He has also written for 2000AD, Vertigo and Marvel, including Hulk and Amazing X-Men. Hollow Monsters marks his first solo comic project. He explained why he felt he had to go it alone for this one:

“It's a very personal and spooky semi-autobiographical story: a timely commentary on how fear shapes the world over time. Like my previous comics, Hollow Monsters is funny, scary, thoughtful, shocking, and lyrical, exploiting the full potential of comics in a way rarely seen before.”

Doing all his own writing, drawing, colouring and lettering allowed Monty to experiment with the look, feel and structure of the work in new ways. Combining manipulated typography with fluid drawing techniques he literally blurs the lines between the verbal and the visual, the real and the imagined, the past and the present, to create something ethereal, disturbing, and challenging.

The story unfolds over six thirty-two-page comics, the first of which is completely finished! However, Monty needs your backing to get the comic printed through crowdfunding.

“I haven’t even thought about sending this one to a publisher. It’s too ambitious and unique a story for anything but Kickstarter. I’m trying to break new ground with my storytelling techniques, and the first thing publishers always ask is ‘What’s it like?’ Well, it’s not like anything else. It’s new territory.”

“I developed the comic on the University of Dundee Masters in Comics programme as a proving ground for some academic ideas I was researching about the differences between comics, prose and imagery. It’s a fascinating area to study, and a great story. If you’re interested in what the medium of comics can do, Hollow Monsters is the comic for you.”

So what do you get from the Kickstarter? As well as being able to pre-order the comic in digital or print format, there are loads of cool perks on offer.
