Today at the Proms - Prom 2
Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2018, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 2: Mozart, Ravel and Fauré ...
A much gentler day today with ballet music from Ravel (who didn't just do the Bolero you know) and a stunning piano concerto from Mozart, played by an up and coming Swiss pianist called Francesco Piemontesi. First up though we wind down with possibly one of the most relaxing pieces of music and Fauré's Pavane. In case you don't know, a Pavane was a stately dance done in stately homes in the 16th and 17th centuries. Quite often it is paired with a Galliard and it's said the name comes from the Spanish word for Peacock as the dancers look like peacocks strutting around the hall in their finery.
The Proms tonight features a choral version of the Pavane but here is an unusual orchestration of it with cellos from the Berliner Philharmoniker
