Today at the Proms - Day 15

Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2021, Susan Omand takes a quick look at today's Prom...

It's Friday 13th! Lucky for some though as, no matter how bad the day or grey the weather, it will always be sunny summer days [or at least late spring - Ed] with tonight's Prom. We start with the late Anthony Payne's Spring's Shining Wake, which finds its inspiration in the almost impressionistic, painterly Delius song In a Summer Garden.

Then, in the words of the classic song from Grease "summer days, drifting away to, oh, those summer nights." [Tell me more - Ed] These Summer Nights however, or to give the song cycle it's proper French moniker Les nuits d'été, are by Hector Berlioz, featuring the glorious voice of mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly.

It's after the interval we head, though, for today's clip and everything is still a Pastoral idyll as we get the full Symphony No 6 by Beethoven, which you'll instantly recognise from such diverse TV as The Simpsons or Spongebob Squarepants. Or, here, with skipping centaurs, unicorn donkeys and drunken gods, from the 1940 Disney classic, Fantasia.
