Today at the Proms - Prom 9

Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2018, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 9: War & Peace  ...

Another mix of old and new today. The new comes from Latvian composer Ä’riks EÅ¡envalds, whose choral work is imaginative and highly demanding, both of performer and listener, so I'm looking forward to hearing something new from him.

Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem is always stunning to listen to. Violent, dramatic and very evocative of the wartime in which it was written (1940) even though it was written as a commission piece for, surprisingly, the Japanese government, although they did reject it.

And finally an old favourite of many with Beethoven's 9th, which includes the very familiar Ode to Joy. Although I'm sure the version tonight will sound nothing like this one...
