Today at the Proms - Prom 26 & 27

Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2019, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 26: Mozart's Requiem and Prom 27: The Sound of Space: Sci-Fi Film Music ...

Watch Prom 27 on Friday 9th August and Prom 26 on Sunday 11th August. (Why they couldn't have done them in chronological order I don't know).

It's another twofer today. The early prom is guaranteed to have you (ok maybe just me then) in floods of tears as the main work after the interval is Mozart's heart-rending Requiem in D Minor. The works before the interval are not any more cheerful either, first with a Brahms overture actually called "The Tragic Overture", so that can't possibly end well, and then a tale of forbidden love condensed into 17 minutes as we get the start and end of the story in the Prelude and Liebestod (which translates from German as "Love Death") of Wagner's opera Tristan and Isolde.

However, it's the late prom tonight that I think a lot of people will be interested in as we get a selection of movie themes from sci fi films. Soundtrack music plays a huge part in setting the tone of a film and can make or break a movie if it is too intrusive or not appropriate because, in many cases, it tells you how to feel about a particular scene. There's a superb range of work on offer in this prom, with Hans Zimmer being all shimmery Zimmery in Interstellar and the glorious music from Gravity by Steven Price but, obviously, there's only one film that our twin site over at The DreamCage would demand that we showcase for you and that's Duncan Jones' Moon, with the stunning music of Clint Mansell. Welcome to Lunar Industries...
